UCLA Plans Research Park at Former Westside Pavilion Mall
UCLA plans to transform the former Westside Pavilion shopping mall, which it acquired Wednesday from Hudson Pacific Properties and Macerich for $700 million, into the UCLA Research Park. The 687,000-square-foot property will initially host two multidisciplinary research centers: the California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy at UCLA and the UCLA Center for Quantum Science and Engineering.
“We will remake the empty former mall into a state-of-the-art hub of research and innovation that will bring scholars from different higher education institutions, corporate partners, government agencies and startups together to explore new areas of inquiry and achieve breakthroughs that will serve our global society,” said UCLA Chancellor Gene Block.
The university cited “favorable real estate market conditions” in acquiring the property, which Hudson Pacific and Macerich had rebranded as an office complex known as One Westside and Westside Two. UCLA also credited Google, which had leased a portion of the property, with helping to enable and support the acquisition.
