Skanska to Build Rhode Island NOAA Marine Operations Center
Skanska has secured a $147 million contract from the U.S. Navy, acting on behalf of NOAA, to develop the new NOAA Marine Operations Center within Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island.
“We are thrilled to be constructing the new NOAA marine operations center,” said Paul Pedini, senior vice president, Skanska USA Civil’s New England region. “The facility will be pivotal in advancing NOAA’s ship operations, and we’re proud to contribute to the growth of what will soon become a vital hub for ocean research, sustainability and innovation fostering.”
The project encompasses constructing a pier to house four large vessels, alongside utilities, an administration building spanning 22,129 square feet, parking facilities, exterior storage areas, and a loading and laydown zone. This facility will serve as the Atlantic region’s headquarters for NOAA’s Office of Marine and Aviation Operations (OMAO). Commencing in December 2023, the project is scheduled for completion by July 2027.
