DC Affordable Housing Complex Breaks Ground

Soto Architecture & Urban Design has broken ground on H.R. Crawford Gardens, a multi-family affordable housing complex in DC’s Deanwood area.

The six-story building will include 76 units, 30% of which will be three-bedroom. Twelve units will be fully accessible. The building’s amenities will include a fitness center and community room on the ground floor and a community room that opens onto an outdoor terrace on the top floor. The project will incorporate sustainable elements like a well-sealed building structure, solar panels, a green roof, and facade louvers to manage sunlight exposure.

“Not only does this affordable housing development have a modern design, but it also achieves Passive House Certification Standards, a serious technological feat that we considered early on in the design process,” stated Fernando Bonilla-Verdesoto, founder and principal of Soto. “I’m also delighted that this project will address the need for multigenerational housing in our City”.
