Construction on Revamped Oregon State Capitol Enters Next Phase

Construction at the Oregon State Capitol is well underway, with the current focus on completing a slab foundation. This foundation, consisting of 13,000 yards of poured concrete, will provide stability and support to the building constructed in 1938, reported the Statesman Journal.

The work is part of a $465 million project to overhaul Salem’s aging capitol building and grounds. In 2013, a report found that updates and repairs were needed to address structural integrity and ensure the property was prepared for a major earthquake and seismic activity. The latest phase of the Oregon Capitol Construction project began in 2022 and is scheduled to end in January 2025.

Phases I and II of the massive overhaul, which addressed mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and seismic concerns, have been completed. Phase III is focused on the 1938 portion of the property, including strengthening the dome and upgrading sound systems and elevators.
