Boston Exits Program Banning Fossil Fuels in New Construction

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu announced that the city will not participate in a state program allowing communities to ban fossil fuels in new buildings.

This decision surprised environmental advocates, as it contradicts the mayor’s recent statements expressing the city’s intent to join the program. The pilot initiative is the only way Massachusetts communities can enforce such bans without violating state regulations.

Boston’s exclusion from the program is attributed to its electric grid’s similarity to other cities already selected. The move has raised concerns about potential influence from real estate developers opposing fossil fuel bans, while Wu remains committed to reducing the city’s carbon footprint.
