Switch to Add Second Austin-Area Data Center

Switch continues work on its first Round Rock data center facility, a 36-acre, 1.5 million-square-foot campus known as “The Rock” on land it purchased from Dell (see photo). The Austin City Council recently approved a second location for Switch, this one 32 acres, on Louis Henna Boulevard and east of Greenlawn Boulevard, also on land that Dell Technologies previously owned.

The Austin Business Journal reports site plans show the new space would include buildings, an electrical substation, a communications tower and parking spaces and would be enclosed by a perimeter wall. These buildings — which many call ‘the cloud’ — are enormous and very guarded.

It was not clear whether the company would pursue incentives for their newest project. They will receive tax breaks for their first project as long as they spend over $80 million on the buildout.
