Mayor Johnson Taps Ciere Boatright to Lead Dept of Planning, Development

Mayor Brandon Johnson has chosen Ciere Boatright, a real estate executive with a background in community development, as the new Director of the Department of Planning and Development. Boatright, who has strong ties to the city’s South Side, has a record of bringing investments to areas that have historically been lacking in development.

Longtime Chicago Zoning Administrator Patrick Murphey has held the role on an interim basis following the exit of former Commissioner Maurice Cox. Boatright previously worked at Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives, leading projects in Pullman and other South Side neighborhoods.

She will leave her current role as Vice President of Real Estate and Community Development at CRG, a Chicago development firm, to join Johnson’s administration. In her new role, she will oversee the Department of Planning and Development and work to ensure equitable economic growth and neighborhood engagement. Boatright’s appointment is pending City Council approval and is expected to take effect on November 20.

“Ciere Boatright is a tremendously talented and respected executive with a proven track record of managing public and private developments across the City and getting deals done.”
