WGA Reaches Tentative Pact with Major Studios
In a boon for California’s economy, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) has reached a tentative agreement with major entertainment companies, signaling that an end to the WGA strike will soon be at hand. The guild has been on strike against the studios since May.
“We can say, with great pride, that this deal is exceptional—with meaningful gains and protections for writers in every sector of the membership,” WGA said in a statement announcing the agreement. However, writers aren’t authorized to return to work until the agreement is finalized, even as picketing has been suspended.
Still ongoing is a strike by the Screen Actors Guild, which began picketing in July. The economic cost of the strikes is expected to total at least $5 billion in California and the other U.S. production hubs of New Mexico, Georgia and New York, according to an estimate from the Milken Institute.
