Patrick Murphey to Lead Chicago Planning Department
Chicago’s Department of Planning & Development has named Patrick Murphey, who is the current city Zoning Administrator, as DPD’s acting commissioner, reported Crain’s. Murphey has held various roles across four administrations and will succeed outgoing DPD Commissioner Maurice Cox.
Cox, who has run the department since 2019, announced his resignation last month. As the head of the DPD, Murphey will oversee a department with a staff of 172 individuals and continue to lead the zoning bureau. It’s unclear if Mayor Brandon Johnson will seek a permanent commissioner.
Murphey began as an intern in the department in 2000 before earning his master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Illinois Chicago in 2002. He joined DPD under former Mayor Richard M. Daley’s administration in 2007 as an economic development coordinator, then served in other roles before being named zoning administrator in 2018.
