Grubhub Lays Off 400 Workers As Local Cutbacks Continue
Grubhub has laid off hundreds of workers, according to Crain’s Chicago Business. “After much consideration and evaluation of our business, we have made the difficult decision to reduce Grubhub’s workforce by 15%, impacting approximately 400 of our corporate employees,” the company said in a written statement.
Grubhub had nearly 2,800 workers before the layoff, including 850 at its Chicago headquarters in Burnham Center at 111 W. Washington Street. “While our business has grown since our 2019 pre-pandemic levels, our operating and staff costs have increased at a higher rate,” said CEO Howard Migdal said. “These changes, while difficult, will help ensure we have the right resources and structure to focus on the business priorities and opportunities ahead.”
In 2021, Grubhub was acquired for $7.3 billion by Just Eat Takeaway, a rival company based in Amsterdam. Migdal was named CEO in March after longtime executive Adam DeWitt announced he was leaving the company.
