NYC Recovers Most Jobs from Pandemic but Uneven Across Sectors

New York City has recovered 99.4% of private sector jobs lost during the pandemic. Still, the recovery has been uneven across key industries, according to an analysis by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.

The securities, transportation and warehousing, and office sectors have shown strength in job recovery. However, industries such as retail, restaurants, construction, and tourism continue to lag behind the national recovery rate. The arts, entertainment, and recreation sector has only recovered about 85% of pre-pandemic jobs, while the restaurant sector has recovered 95.5%.

Retailers have regained 87.4% of jobs, and the tourism sector is still nearly 15% below pre-pandemic levels. The construction sector has yet to regain 8% of its pre-pandemic jobs, and the securities sector experienced fluctuations in employment but continues to show growth.
