UT spending $25M to knock down old gym

UT Spending $25M to Demolish Old Gym

The University of Texas men’s basketball team now plays its games in the Moody Center, a multi-purpose arena on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin in Austin, Texas. So, the old gym isn’t needed and its going to cost $25 million to knock it down. The land where the old gym, the Erwin Center, is situated, is expected to be used for the expansion of Dell Medical School.

Demolition could proceed later this year and be wrapped up in October 2024. The Erwin Center was completed in 1977 for a total cost of $34 million. It could accommodate up to 16,540 spectators for basketball games and up to 17,900 spectators for concerts.

The Moody Center, which opened in 2022 seats 10,000 plus for basketball. The Moody Center’s cost to build was $375 million.
