A Decade and $1.9B Later, Seattle Convention Center Debuts
The Summit portion of the Seattle Convention Center has opened in ceremonious fashion, as the country’s first high-rise convention center has finally debuted. The project planning began over 10 years ago, and the $1.9 billion structure was almost derailed by the pandemic slowdown, but the doors are now open at the 1.5-million-square-foot facility.
LMN designed Summit, a five-story structure with a large atrium, 574,000 square feet of event space and a 14,000-square-foot outdoor Garden Terrace. Summit is also targeting LEED Gold certification with LED lighting, rooftop solar panels, plant-based acoustic ceiling tiles, low-flow plumbing and EV charging.
In 2018 the board of directors determined the Arch Building of the Seattle Convention Center wasn’t large enough to host several simultaneous events, so Summit was okayed to increase capacity, economically benefiting the state. Officials now say there have been 58 events booked at the Convention Center, with eight using the Arch and Summit simultaneously.
