Shuttered Las Vegas Casino to Become Public Sports Facility
The City of Henderson pulled the trigger on a land deal this week, spending $32 million to buy the former Fiesta Casino property. City officials are considering building an indoor recreational facility on the 38-acre site that could potentially include basketball and volleyball courts, as well as baseball and softball diamonds that can be converted into turf fields. The casino closed down during the COVID pandemic and was never reopened by the owners, Station Casinos.
Economic Development and Tourism Director Jared Smith said the city got a good deal for the lot as it came in at nearly half of the property’s appraisal from September, 2022. Smith says building the sports complex could trigger more economic development, “We’d love to see restaurants pop up and shopping, which would be great for the people there in the sports facility as well as residents downtown and the east side.”
