The Wirtz family, owners of United Center and the Chicago Blackhawks, have gotten approval from the Village of Mundelein to annex 740 acres of farmland

Wirtz Family’s Plan for 740-Acre Mixed-Use in Mundelein Clears Hurdle

The Wirtz family’s plan to develop 740 acres of farmland in Lake County cleared its first major hurdle Monday evening, when the Mundelein, IL Village Board approved a proposal to annex the property, reported Crain’s Chicago Business. The property is the oldest asset in a Wirtz family empire that includes two banks, the United Center and Chicago Blackhawks.

Representatives of the Wirtzes, who have owned the property since 1857, unveiled an ambitious proposal for the site last month. Known as Ivanhoe Village, it would include 3,200 homes—both rental and for-sale—and more than two million square feet of retail, office and other commercial space.

“The annexation is an early, but important, step in a longer planning process that we hope will result in ownership, the developer and the Village realizing the vision of this project,” Amanda Orenchuk, Mundelein’s director of community development, said in a statement.
