Barnes & Noble Returning to Upper East Side After Three Years

Barnes & Noble is returning to Manhattan’s Upper East Side, opening a new bookstore at 1556 Third Ave., at the intersection with East 87th Street. The bookseller closed its previous bookstore on East 86th Street in the summer of 2020, after 12 years in the neighborhood.

The new location takes over the storefront previously occupied by Duane Reade and is situated directly across the street from Whole Foods. The new Barnes & Noble bookstore will open in the spring of 2023.

“It is very good news to bring our bookstore back to the Upper East Side,” said Barnes & Noble CEO James Daunt. “It was very sad to close in the depths of the pandemic and especially pleasing now to reopen with one that is so dramatically more attractive,”

Newmark vice chairman Ariel Schuster, senior managing director Jackie Totolo and director Michael Paster represented Barnes and Noble.
