Adams Rolls Out Citywide Resiliency Measures on Tropical Storm Ida Anniversary
On the one-year anniversary of Tropical Storm Ida hitting the New York metro area and bringing floods, property damage and fatalities with it, the Adams administration unveiled a suite of citywide resiliency measures. They include adding more curbside rain gardens, upgrading the sewer system and expanding a data collection system to monitor street-level flooding.
“New York City is adapting to the realities of climate change in real time and doing everything we can to keep New Yorkers safe and honor all that we lost one year ago today,” Mayor Eric Adams said Thursday.
The city is receiving $188 million via the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to support long-term recovery efforts following Ida, which claimed 13 lives locally. The funds will be used for programs to strengthen the resiliency of affordable housing stock, among other measures.
