Lawmakers Push Chicago HQ for Federal Medical Research Center
U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin led members of the Illinois Congressional Delegation in advocating Chicago-area headquarters for a medical research agency, Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), proposed by President Biden and funded this past year by Congress.
The lawmakers highlighted Chicagoland’s unique position with its geographical location, array of jobs, companies, students and professionals in life sciences and various local stakeholders’ commitment to health equity in their letter to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and Acting Deputy Director Adam Russell.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot endorsed the bid for ARPA-H headquarters. “Chicago is a natural fit, with a rapidly growing healthcare and life sciences sector; world-class research universities; and a talented, diverse workforce,” said Lightfoot. “Led by the Chicago Department of Public Health and World Business Chicago, we look forward to making the case for Chicago, home of groundbreaking innovation.”
