Oakland Officially Addressing Affordable Housing for Next 20 Years

Affordable, sustainable, accessible, available – housing is top-of-mind for Oakland, Calif. The city’s General Plan Update outlines how the city will meet its housing goals for the next 20 years. On Feb. 17, more than 100 people attended the first public (and virtual) workshop on te plan.

To meet the state’s Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA), Oakland must plan for 26,000 new housing units that are affordable to people from extremely low- to above-moderate-income households. 

The City, and its technical consultant Dyett & Bhatia, has launched an interactive map that will allow Oakland residents to identify specific locations where more housing should be built. The housing sites map will be open for public input until March 7.

The nine-story Oakland Police Department headquarters could be torn down and replaced with affordable housing. The City Council voted Feb. 15 to begin seeking proposals for the redevelopment of the Police Administration Building, or PAB, at Seventh Street and Broadway in downtown Oakland.
