LA Board of Supes Vote to Extend Eviction Protections
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors recently voted 4 to 1 to extend eviction protections for many pandemic-impacted tenants in unincorporated areas through the end of the year. The move was soundly opposed by landlords, and apartment and rental associations.
The board’s action keeps in place existing protections against no-fault evictions through March 31. These are protections that had been set to expire at the end of this month.
Beginning April 1, the county will reinstate protections against renters who fail to pay rent. But starting June 1, the protection for nonpayment will be provided only to lower-income tenants, those who make up to 80 percent of area median income.
Other tenant protections will also be lifted on June 1, with some being lifted at the end of the year. The eviction protection for nonpayment by lower-income tenants will continue until June 2023.
