AISD Middle School to Serve NE Austin on Former Airport Site
A new design was recently unveiled for a new three-story middle school in Austin that will serve the northeast section of the city and Mueller, the city’s new urbanist development built on the site of the city’s former airport. The 130,000-square-foot campus, on 10 acres that once served as the airport runway, will create a campus for Austin Independent School District (AISD) focused on interdisciplinary project-driven learning. The campus, designed to meet LEED Gold standards, also will double as a community hub, creating a strong link between the school and its surrounding transit-oriented neighborhoods.
“LPA and Joeris General Contractors worked together through the integrated design-build delivery method to ensure that AISD’s priorities across stakeholders were balanced in the design,” said Drew Johnson, director of bond planning and project controls for the AISD construction management department. “That process of engaged listening ultimately led to a project that we are all excited to see come into reality and begin impacting the students it is intended for.”
Construction on the new middle school in Northeast Austin started in August 2021 and is expected to complete in Fall 2023.
