EBI on Achieving Sustainability: It All Starts with Benchmarking (VIDEO)
In the second of three video interviews moderated by Connect CRE founder and CEO Daniel Ceniceros, EBI Consulting’s Mike Eardley and Will Duggan take viewers through the process of bringing a commercial property, and its owner, along the road to achieving sustainability. The beginning of that process is benchmarking.
“With any goal, you benchmark where you are currently,” says Eardley, director of energy and sustainability at Burlington, MA-based EBI. “You do some sort of study about ‘how can I improve things,’ and then you actually make those improvements.”
Erdley’s job is energy benchmarking, and he provides a breakdown of what that actually entails and what the implications are for property owners in terms of next steps. Then comes an energy audit, and finally determining what needs to be done to “tune up” the building.
For ESG program manager Duggan, it’s about working with both Eardley and his team as well as with building owners to understand their management processes. EBI works with GRESB, the Netherlands-based standards organization, to help fund managers show that “they’re taking ESG seriously, and improving” by reporting to GRESB annually.
In the video below, you’ll also hear the EBI experts on how ESG has come to prominence so rapidly, and what advice they would give to clients starting out on the ESG process.
