Port Authority Convenes Panel to Study AirTrain Alternatives

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said Tuesday it had convened a panel of experts to review mass transit options for reducing car traffic and increasing connectivity to LaGuardia Airport. They include Mike Brown, former Commissioner of Transport for London; Jeanette Sadik-Khan, former Commissioner of the NYC Department of Transportation; and Philip A. Washington, CEO of Denver International Airport.

Among other options, the panel will look at improved bus service, ferry service, one-system rides including subway extension options, and elevated guideway options including light rail. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority will be a key participant in the analysis.

The Port Authority’s action follows last month’s request from New York Gov. Kathy Hochul to study alternatives to the proposed $2.1-billion AirTrain project, which has drawn criticism from transit advocates, environmental groups and elected officials. The AirTrain project received a long-awaited signoff from the Federal Aviation Administration in July.
