Chicago City Hall Mayor Lori Lightfoot 2022 budget

Lightfoot’s 2022 Spending Plan Wins City Council Approval

The Chicago City Council on Wednesday passed Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s 2022 spending plan in a 35-15 vote. That plan includes a $76.5-million increase in property taxes, which passed 32-18, along with $1.2 billion in COVID relief funding from the federal government.

“I am beyond excited to announce the passage of the most progressive and forward-looking budget in our city’s history,” said Lightfoot. “As we move away from the pandemic, we must use this opportunity and once-in-a-lifetime funding to address the economic and emotional pain it has wreaked on our communities.”

Lightfoot’s spending plan aims to create and preserve thousands of affordable housing units, and activate and clean vacant lots. It includes $176 million for small business and tourism and industry support, and also calls for planting tens of thousands of new trees and establishing and improving amenities such as grocery stores, commercial spaces, and parks.
