Pullman National Monument Opens as “Community Anchor” on Chicago’s South Side
Pullman National Monument’s visitor center doors and state historic site grounds opened to the public over Labor Day weekend. Declared a National Monument in 2015, the site on Chicago’s Far South Side is subject to the establishment of a management plan, a process getting underway only now.
In partnership with the National Park Service, National Park Foundation, Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives—which has spearheaded economic development in Pullman–and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources transformed the 12-acre grounds. The process was spurred by donations, including a lead gift from the Pritzker Traubert Foundation.
“The Pullman National Monument is a community anchor that beautifully honors Pullman’s rich history and serves as an attraction for Chicagoans and people across the nation,” said Pritzker Traubert Foundation trustee Bryan Traubert. “The Pritzker Traubert Foundation is proud to invest in infrastructure that supports economic and cultural vitality on the South Side.”
