Hochul Seeks Special Legislative Session to Address “Impending Eviction Crisis”
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said Friday that she was in talks with state legislative leaders to call a special session addressing what she termed “the impending eviction crisis” following the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling to halt the nationwide moratorium on evictions.
Although no further development had occurred by late Sunday afternoon, the governor said her team as well as those of the Senate Majority Leader and Assembly Speaker would work through the weekend “to address how best to deliver relief to renters and homeowners in need as quickly as possible.’
Earlier, Hochul expressed disappointment with the high court’s ruling, which she called “appalling and insensitive.” She said the decision to strike down the moratorium “eliminates a key line of defense for tenants facing housing insecurity during the ongoing pandemic.”
New York State’s moratorium on evictions expires on Tuesday. The nationwide moratorium was due to end on Oct. 3.
