CDC Issues New Eviction Moratorium Amid “Unexpected” COVID Resurgence
Three days after the expiration of the federal moratorium on evictions in effect since last September, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a new order temporarily halting evictions in counties with heightened levels of community transmission of COVID-19. The order is in effect through Oct. 3.
The CDC imposed the new moratorium “in order to respond to recent, unexpected developments in the trajectory of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the rise of the Delta variant. It is intended to target specific areas of the country where cases are rapidly increasing, which likely would be exacerbated by mass evictions.”
Counties that aren’t covered by the order as of August 3 but begin experiencing rapid increases in COVID cases later on will be subject to the order, CDC said. Conversely, counties experiencing 14 consecutive days of declines will no longer be subject to the order.
