Big Film/TV Production Campus Eyed for South Shore

A venture led by Derek Dudley, a producer of The Chi TV series, filed a zoning application with the Chicago City Council for Regal Mile Studios, a proposed film production campus near the historic Avalon Regal Theater in the South Side’s South Shore neighborhood.

Crain’s Chicago Business reported that the project, estimated to cost $60 to $70 million, would include multiple buildings on a 7.4-acre property near where Stony Island Avenue connects with the Chicago Skyway.

Dudley is pursuing the project at an opportune time, Crain’s reported. Demand for studio space in Chicago and the nation far exceeds supply amid an ongoing video entertainment boom. Locally, productions include The Chi, a Showtime drama set on the South Side that’s now in its fourth season.

“We want to make Chicago the Hollywood of the Midwest, and there’s no reason why we can’t do that,” Dudley told Crain’s.
