TxDOT Celebrates Milestone and Aims for Improvement
On April 4, 1917, the 35th Texas Legislature created the Texas Highway Department. That was well before the national interstate highway system. And, at the time, the U.S. highway system and state routes were still in growth mode.
One hundred years later, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) maintains more than 79,000 miles of farm-to-market, ranch-to-market, state, U.S. and interstate highways across Texas. Additionally, TxDOT has oversight of more than 25 million square feet of signs, as well as 100 rest and picnic areas and Travel Information Centers throughout the state, according to information from the Perryman Group.
TxDOT, these days, is figuring out how to handle traffic congestion, especially within Texas’ larger population centers. As the agency enters its second century of existence, it is proposing the Unified Transportation Program, a 10-year funding plan to boost safety, and reduce congestion while “maintaining the state’s massive highway system.”
