The NFL Wants More Audience Wins in 2017
The year 2016 was not great for the National Football League (NFL). Television audiences declined, while empty seats at stadiums were more the norm, than the exception. Other issues such as player safety and player protests during the national anthem also did little to help the once seemingly invincible NFL.
As a result, some changes are being made for the 2017 season. For one thing, the league and its television partners have cut the number of commercial breaks, among other moves to improve the flow of the game. Network announcers have been replaced with those who might appeal to younger fans. And, that “excessive celebration” penalty following a team’s touchdown, is no more.
Finally, designing a more appealing schedule is a huge part of the change. More competitive games will air in prime-time slots, in an attempt to keep old fans, and hook new ones.
