The Instagram Effect on Office Design

National  + Weekender  |

From creative to traditional office spaces, social media is influencing office designers’ decisions. When creating workspaces, designers are asking, “Is it Instagrammable?” making the widespread photo-sharing app Instagram a verb much like Google has become.

Along with building company culture, offices with interactive design, selfie walls, art installations and creative spaces are serving as a recruitment tool for jobseekers as they look at photos and use hashtags to research prospective companies for employment. For example, Buzzfeed has selfie walls across its global offices. Adobe System’s San Jose headquarters boasts interactive art spaces and creations made from Adobe software.

Another reason for such installations is to entice employees to want to come into the office. LinkedIn’s Cherish Rosas, an environmental graphic design project manager says, “We want our employees to have fun and engage,” so they installed murals to represent different countries where employees can throw on jackets and match the wall in their Sunnyvale, CA headquarters.

The reach of social media and its influence, especially on the millennial generation, continues to have far-reaching impacts outside the digital world.
