Thanksgiving Day Closure Roll Call

National  + Weekender  |

An interesting retail trend is emerging that bears watching. The official kick-off to the Holiday shopping season is reversing a creep earlier and earlier into the fall. Last year, Black Friday shopping visits stole from Thanksgiving Day visits – a first in years – in part because fewer stores stayed open on the holiday.

A primary reason stores say they prefer to close on Thanksgiving is to give employees and customers more time to be with family.

The trend to push back the official shopping starting line is gaining momentum. This year, according to BestBlackFriday.com, the list planning to go dark on Thanksgiving (Nov. 23) has exceeded 75 retailers.

Among the notable retailers on the roll call so far are Burlington, Cabela’s, Cost Plus World Market, Costco, DSW, H&M, Home Depot, IKEA, Lowe’s, Neiman Marcus, Sam’s Club and TJ Maxx.

For the first time in years, Game Stop plans to be open on Thanksgiving, as does discount retailer Big Lots.
