Seattle Claims Crane Crown, Again

National  + Weekender  |

Seattle claimed the crown of crane capital of America for the second straight year. A study by Rider Levett Bucknall, a firm that tracks cranes around the world, revealed that the Emerald City had 58 construction cranes on the city skyline, roughly 60% more than any other city in the U.S.

The July crane count is down from 62 cranes in January, but the same as a year ago when Seattle also led the nation with 58 cranes. Across the country’s major cities, crane counts have dipped 8% over the past six months.

Los Angeles was ranked No. 2 with 36 cranes, followed by Denver, Chicago and Portland. Seattle’s crane count is more than double than San Francisco or Washington, D.C., and three times as many as New York. By comparison, Toronto has 81 cranes, the most in North America.

Don’t look for the Seattle crane count to wane any time soon. There are 50 major projects slated to commence construction this year, and an additional 99 developments in future year’s pipeline.
