Scientists Use Eye-Tracking Technology to Explain Design
What makes one building more attractive and hospitable than another? An emerging field of scientific research wants to use empirical evidence to back up architects’ claims. Designer Janice M. Ward and architect Ann Sussman are working together and using biometrics-eye tracking to see how people understand and literally see buildings.
The pair attach a camera to a computer and display photographs of buildings, using the software and hardware to witness where the viewers’ eyes go. At the same time, face detection software tracks how the peoples’ emotions change upon viewing different spaces.
Since starting the research in 2015, they have completed four pilot studies and found:
- people ignore blank facades
- people look for people in images
- fixation drives exploration – our subconscious impacts our behavior
With such information, architects can better understand how to design a space to elicit specific responses from those who pass by and inhabit the space.
