Google Leads the Way for Big Business and Renewable Energy

When you think of Google, you probably first think of the search engine that became a verb. But, Google is forging a green path ahead for companies to use renewable energy.

Google will soon begin construction on a 120-megawatt solar plant in southeast Georgia, which will be the first solar facility in the country. Although the facility can’t power a data center alone, Google’s goal is to make renewable energy the primary source for other companies. In Georgia, the agreement is called a green tariff, in which the solar farms will sell renewable energy to the utility company, and the utility will give renewable energy credits back to Google. This means that the government is allowing Google to buy and sell wholesale renewable energy.

The goal is to have all new developments source their power with renewables, and Johnson & Johnson, Target and Walmart have all committed to the program for the next decade.
