Good News for Retail: Multichannel Shopping Increased 40% During Thanksgiving Weekend
Shoppers were busy from Thanksgiving Day through Cyber Monday, with 165 million people in the U.S. buying goods either in stores or online. The end result was 89 million who shopped online and in person, a 40% increase from the year before.
According to the National Retail Federation, the number of actual shoppers was higher than the 164 million surveyed before the holiday weekend, who indicated they would go shopping. The average shopper spent $313.29 on gifts over the five-day period. While this was down from the $335.47 per person reported a year ago, NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay indicated that the situation is positive.
“This year’s research clearly shows that the investments made by retailers are paying off in a big way . . .,” he said. “This is a very strong emotional start to the holiday season, and a positive indicator of where we are headed over the next month.”
Top purchases over the weekend were apparel (bought by 57% of those surveyed); toys (34%); books and video games (29%); electronics (26%) and gift cards (20%).
