First Ground-Up Co-Living Development Under Construction
A Los Angeles-based startup called Treehouse is building what’s dubbed as the nation’s first ground-up co-living housing development. Co-living communities exist in other cities like New York and Washington D.C., but this is reportedly the first to be built from scratch for the purpose of co-living.
Located at 5824 Carlton Way in Hollywood, the low-rise building will include 18 units with 60 bedrooms. The goal is to build ground-up and create an environment that supports community. Treehouse plans to do so with free cafes for residents, a gym, chef’s kitchen with weekly hosted meals and a two-story co-working library. It’s slated for completion in 2019.
Treehouse co-founders Prophet Walker and Brent Gaisford believe that co-living helps overcome the feelings of being alone and isolated, and can also help solve the affordable housing crisis.
The development is supported by Mayor Eric Garcetti, who believes that the city needs to “stay open to new ideas for meeting Angelenos’ needs at every stage of their lives.”
