Everything Mobile: UBS’ Innovative Set-Up

Switzerland-based UBS has designed its newly opened office building in London with what it’s calling “thin desks,” or completely mobile desks which allow employees to work from any space in the 700,000 square foot building at 5 Broadgate.

The set-up means that employees don’t carry around laptops, but rather they can log in to any desktop at any desk in the office or at home. There are lockers set up at each desk for their items, but if they need to store something long-term, it can be retrieved from an off-site location within two hours.

So far, about 89% of the 600,000 employees set to work out of the building, designed by Make Architects’ Ken Shuttleworth, have moved in. The amount of offices inside has been reduced by 40%, and there are no desks by windows, with the intent to let light flow inside.

Currently, 25,000 to 30,000 employees use mobile desks in Switzerland, but by the end of 2017, the goal is to have 72,000 thin desks globally.
