Women in Real Estate 2019: Alta Properties’ Kathleen Kusiak Partners with Sector Experts

Kathleen Kusiak launched Alta Properties, a Newton, MA-based real estate development and investment company investing in value-add commercial real estate, in 2007, 19 years into a 31-year commercial real estate career. Working with other partners that have expertise with specific property types, she has created affiliated companies to further grow the company and invest in larger assets.

Today Alta’s portfolio exceeds $500 million in asset value and spans several million square feet, with asset classes including office, hotel, medical office, industrial, assisted living, multifamily and mixed-use buildings.

Virtually all of Alta’s acquisitions have required a major repositioning, re-branding, renovation, leasing program, etc. From a Lowell, MA mill building that was home to pigeons and became a fully-occupied $50-million high-end apartment building, to a poorly managed medical office building that she bought, repositioned and sold for a substantial profit, Kusiak has taken well-considered chances that others passed on–and they have paid off.

These are just some of the reasons we chose Kusiak as one of the 2019 Women in Real Estate Award winners. Connect Media’s Women in Real Estate Awards honor the achievements and inspirational stories of women who have reached respected positions of leadership and play key mentorship roles for others.

Kusiak is a connector who works hard to make sure that all parties have aligned interests. She believes one of the reasons that her projects have such high returns is that everyone on the team has a strong incentive to collaborate.
