Canopy by Hilton Riverwalk Blends Old and New

The Canopy by Hilton Riverwalk is a 22-story boutique hotel located at the intersection of North St. Mary’s Street and East Commerce Street on River Walk Street next to the Esquire Tavern. Also known as the Alamo Fish Market, the structure originally housed O’Connor & Sullivan bank in the late 1800s following the Civil War.

The 195-key property will encompass a portion of the existing structure, meshing the existing historic building with the new design for a Hilton brand concept. The partnership of Gensler and Lake|Flato is behind the design of the project.

The courtyard at the River Walk level features several historic elements of the project such as the historic stone wall of the Alamo Fish Market structure and the Esquire Building. A historic masonry cistern located on the patio was carefully dismantled and rebuilt with wraparound banquette seating.

To keep the building connected with surrounding historic buildings, the hotel is designed with a limestone and brick facade as well as terraces positioned for River Walk views. At the river level, Gensler designed a new terrace which provides more public space.

The Canopy is designed with a street-level lobby and retail space. Other areas include a restaurant and bar with an outdoor courtyard at the River Walk level and level two meeting rooms. The third level houses the business and guest lounge, fitness center and two amenity decks.
