NYC Jobs Growth Outpaces U.S. in April

New York City saw a net gain of 35,100 jobs in April while the state posted a monthly gain of 29,200 jobs, according to figures released Thursday by the New York State Department of Labor. The state’s month-over-month employment increase of 0.4% was twice as fast as that of the U.S. a whole.

New York State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 8.4% to 8.2% in April 2021. The city’s declined by 30 basis points to 11.4%.

However, that represented a smaller monthly decline than the city managed in March and was still nearly twice the U.S. unemployment rate of 6.1%. Outside the city, New York State’s unemployment rate ended April at 4.7%.

Since April of 2020, New York City has posted a net gain of 376,200 jobs, a slower year-over-year growth pace than job gains on Long Island or in the Orange-Rockland-Westchester metro area, according to state figures.
