Zoning Committee Signs Off on Obama Center Plan
In contrast to the seven-hour meeting that preceded last week’s Plan Commission vote on the Obama Presidential Center project, the Zoning Committee reportedly took considerably less time to sign off on the $500-million plan to build in Jackson Park. The project will be considered by the full City Council at its Wednesday meeting.
Among other provisions, Tuesday’s vote calls for the city to spend $175 million on public infrastructure improvements needed to accommodate the Obama Center. These include closing streets to vehicular traffic, redirecting traffic onto other streets, and widening Lake Shore Drive near the park.
In a statement following Tuesday’s vote, Mayor Rahm Emanuel called the Obama Center “a powerful economic, educational and cultural engine for Chicago,” and said that with the committee’s vote, “the vision for the Obama Presidential Center came closer to becoming a reality on Chicago’s South Side.”
