WTC Update

In the 16 years since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, three office towers have opened on the World Trade Center (WTC) site in Lower Manhattan, with a total of nearly eight million square feet. Another three towers are planned or under construction, including Three World Trade Center, almost finished.

If and when all these towers ever open, the whole complex may total more than 14 million square feet of office space. The old World Trade Center complex totaled more than 13 million square feet of office space — however, the neighborhood has changed a lot since then.

“In the late 80s, after 5 o’clock or 6 o’clock at night, you could roll a bowling ball down the middle of Wall Street and nothing would happen — there was nobody there … It’s totally transformed today. This is a 24/7 neighborhood,” said Larry Silverstein, owner of WTC-owner Silverstein Properties in an interview with amNewYork.
