Weingarten Plans 29-Story Tower in Houston’s River Oaks

Houston-based Weingarten Realty plans to develop The Driscoll, a 29-story apartment tower at the River Oaks Shopping Center in Neartown Houston. The company envisions the integration of residential at 1958 W. Gray into the work and play experience at the retail site.

In a project description filed with the city in advance of public hearings this week, the developer outlined plans to demolish roughly 18,000 square feet of existing buildings and build a 675,000-square-foot mixed-use project with apartments, 11,000 square feet of ground-floor retail and an eight-level parking garage.

The Driscoll’s design reflects the historic Art Deco styled shopping center, owned by Weingarten since 1972. Architectural elements include streamlined horizontal lines and simple black and white colors. The tower, which will provide 360-degree views of Houston, is expected to commence construction in 2018.
