Walmart to Shutter Neighborhood Market
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. announced it would be closing one of its Neighborhood Markets on San Antonio’s northeast side. The store at 3175 Nacogdoches Rd. will be shuttered on Dec. 4, 2017.
A company spokesperson told the San Antonio Express-News that lower-than-expected sales, combined with an oversaturation of existing stores, is leading to the store’s demise. Furthermore, the company is spending more time and money on remodeling and technological initiatives; Wal-Mart Stores remodeled four stores in the San Antonio area in 2017.
The 38,000-square-foot Neighborhood Market, one of Walmart’s largest smaller-format stores, opened in 2015. The company has 49 stores, including 10 Neighborhood Market stores, in the San Antonio area.
