UPS Tests Electric Bicycle Deliveries

Being stuck in traffic is timely and costly for both businesses and the environment. In an effort to decrease its carbon emissions amidst an increasing demand for deliveries, UPS has brought its pilot eBike delivery program to Portland, Oregon.

The “Cargo Cruiser” is an electric tricycle with a UPS brown box on the back. The company first tested this delivery method in Germany back in 2012, but this is its first attempt in America. Riders can power the bike by foot, motor or a hybrid of both.

Calculations have not yet been made for how much electricity the bikes will consume, but according to UPS’ automotive and engineering manager, Scott Phillippi, the bikes’ usage will displace approximately two gallons of fuel per day.
