United Airlines Eyes Other Headquarters Options
Four-and-a-half years ahead of its lease expiration option at Willis Tower, United Airlines has been talking with developers behind some of the city’s largest proposed office projects, Crain’s Chicago Business reported. The discussions are said to be preliminary, and it’s not clear whether the airline seriously intends to depart the 850,000-plus square feet it occupies at Chicago’s tallest tower.
However, the fact that the airline is reportedly considering its options is a testament to the widening array of options available for large corporate tenants downtown. The new projects on the drawing boards in the Fulton Market District and other locations—not all in the Loop—will offer more choices to tenants looking for cutting-edge workspaces, Crain’s reported.
United would have to decide at least two years in advance of its lease expiration option in March 2023. Crain’s reported that industry watchers will be keeping an eye on the airline’s moves.
