UCSF’s Cure for AIDS Within Five-Year Reach
December 1 marked World AIDS Day, and in five years time, there may be a cure, according to researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
The American Foundation for AIDS Research awarded UCSF a grant, taken from a pool of $100M that’s been raised in the global war against AIDS, to eradicate the virus and cure those who are already infected.
Dr. Paul Volberding, a leading researcher, is heading the Institute for HIV Cure Research, and although he cannot promise a cure within five years, he remains optimistic that there is a strong chance for success. Both the promise of funding, along with recent research, propels him to believe that they are actually capable of meeting the estimated time frame. He also noted that placing a five year deadline further motivates the team.
