UC Poll Says Majority of Orange County Voters Support Rent Control
Connect Apartments is planned for September 28th in Los Angeles. Here’s where to get more information and register.
A UC Berkeley Institute for Government Studies poll shows 55% of voters in Orange County and San Diego support rent control as a way to ensure middle-and lower-income people remain in those communities. Statewide, the number increases to 60%, with support for rent control strongest among Democrats and renters.
Currently, there are no Orange County jurisdictions that have rent control for apartments, and only San Juan Capistrano has rent control at mobile home parks. Roughly a dozen cities statewide have rent control. State law limits it to buildings built before 1996.
Proponents say skyrocketing rents are spiraling out of control. The opposition counters that rent control would likely do more harm than good because it becomes a disincentive to build housing, and existing properties tend to be less well maintained.
