U.S. Steel Sees Lift from Tariffs, Will Restart IL Facility

Although steel and aluminum makers are widely reported as unhappy with the Trump administration’s proposed tariffs, U.S. Steel is pretty upbeat about it. The company will restart one of two blast furnaces and the steelmaking facilities at its Granite City Works, an integrated steelmaking plant in Granite City, IL.

U.S. Steel said the added capacity will support anticipated increased demand for steel domestically, as a result of the White House’s pending action. “Our Granite City Works facility and employees, as well as the surrounding community, have suffered too long from the unending waves of unfairly traded steel products that have flooded U.S. markets,” said CEO David B. Burritt.

The Granite City plant was idled in late 2015 and early 2016, and U.S. Steel will begin calling back workers later this month. It hasn’t decided whether to restart the main blast furnace at the facility.
